Origin

This meme is a later fusion of a sound and a video that were made separately. The sound came first. In early October 2021, @dr.frex — a Turkish TikTok user and fan of the game Friday Night Funkin' — posted a screen recording of a message exchange with a friend in which they vocalized a tune in the game's style at varying speeds. That ridiculous-sounding audio became a meme on Turkish TikTok first, spreading as people mimed the sound and layered face filters over it.

The video was attached in 2023. On April 12, Bilibili user 黑瘦的鱼头 uploaded a remix pairing the "Oo Ee A E A" audio with an edit of a spinning cat, and it drew millions of views. The transparent GIF of a cat rotating in place had been floating around the internet for years already; meeting this audio is what completed the form we know. Remixes exploded on Bilibili and YouTube in April 2023. The video was reposted to YouTube that year by Sillius The Third, and YouTuber Remittal's remix set to music from A Dance of Fire and Ice passed nine million views.

Remixes kept coming because the format is trivially simple: match the cat's rotation speed to the music and it fits any track. Derivatives that changed nothing but the song multiplied endlessly, and in December 2024 the trend came back around on TikTok as people paired the cat with assorted pop songs.
