It comes from the black protective face mask Son Heung-min wore at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The mask was not a costume choice but a medical necessity: in early November 2022 he collided with an opposing player during a UEFA Champions League match and suffered a fracture around his left eye socket, requiring surgery.

The World Cup was days away. The headline of a November 10th, 2022 Kyunghyang Shinmun report captures the mood: "If there's even a 1% chance, a face mask is nothing." A carbon mask supplied by his club Tottenham was approved by FIFA, and he played the group stage wearing it.

The mask made an impression for more than its look. A black device covering half the face reads like comic-book superhero gear, and yet the reason for it was a real fracture. As it became known that he was playing with restricted vision and a mask filling with sweat in the heat, the object came to stand for playing hurt.

Match footage supplied the material directly. He attempted a header while masked against Ghana, and as the Hankook Ilbo summarized, his third World Cup came to be remembered through the mask and the refereeing decisions around it.

The decisive scene came after the final group match. The moment Korea's place in the round of 16 was confirmed, Son tore the mask off and wept on the pitch — images and clips of that moment circulated en masse and became the meme's central image. Follow-up coverage explained why he had thrown the mask off.

It spread along two tracks: fan art and composites treating the masked face heroically, and casual edits pasting the mask onto any photo at all. The same image served both reverence and joking.
