Origin

John Cena Dancing with Headphones is a meme built on a short clip of the WWE wrestler turned actor seated in a chair, wearing headphones and happily grooving. His fists loosely raised and shoulders bouncing, Cena's carefree look gets paired with captions describing a situation, to show someone who is way too excited about something.

The source is NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. In "The Whisper Challenge" segment with John Cena, uploaded to the show's official YouTube channel on March 23, 2017, one player wears headphones playing loud music and tries to guess a phrase by reading the other's lips, and at around the 0:31 mark Cena starts dancing in his seat to the music in his headphones. The video drew about 8 million views and 126,000 likes over six years.

After more than five quiet years, the moment resurfaced on TikTok. On April 23, 2022, The Tonight Show's official TikTok account posted the clip, which gathered about 328,700 likes over a year. The decisive push came on April 13, 2023, when CapCut user Ethan Genders created a template that replaced the background behind Cena with a green screen so he could be composited into any scene; it was used more than 389,400 times within a week.

Once the template was out, videos poured in: @ay3demi on April 14 (about 69,000 plays in six days), @biinxie on the 16th (690,800 plays and 120,500 likes in four days), and on the 18th a video from @motionav reached about 5.5 million plays and 1 million likes in two days. From mid-April, K-pop girl group FIFTY FIFTY's "Cupid" became the meme's signature soundtrack.
